Aljamain Sterling Questions Regulatory Priorities Following Oblique Kick Controversy

By MMAReign News Desk·Oct 1, 2026 • 5:04 PM

Aljamain Sterling has criticized Andy Foster's potential push to ban oblique kicks, arguing that athletic commissions should prioritize consistent enforcement of existing rules over introducing new restrictions.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling has voiced criticism toward California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster following reports regarding a potential ban on oblique kicks. The discussion stems from a recent bout at UFC 331 between Brunno Ferreira and Edmen Shahbazyan, where Ferreira utilized oblique kicks throughout the contest. Shahbazyan reportedly protested the maneuver during the fight under the impression that the strike was illegal, although current unified rules do not classify the technique as a foul.

Responding to the prospect of regulatory bodies moving to prohibit the strike, Sterling expressed skepticism regarding the commission's focus. The former champion argued that regulators should prioritize the consistent enforcement of existing rules rather than seeking to outlaw specific techniques. Sterling questioned the logic of introducing new restrictions when officials struggle with the current framework, stating, 'Can we fix accountability for following the rules first?'

The oblique kick, which targets the knee joint, has long been a subject of debate within the sport due to its potential to cause significant injury. While some athletes and observers advocate for its removal from the legal arsenal, Sterling’s comments highlight a broader frustration among fighters regarding officiating consistency and the evolving regulatory landscape of professional mixed martial arts.
