Dana White Backs Andy Foster’s Push to Ban Oblique Kicks
UFC CEO Dana White has voiced his support for athletic commission official Andy Foster's initiative to ban oblique kicks in MMA.
UFC CEO Dana White has officially expressed his support for California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster’s efforts to ban the use of oblique kicks in mixed martial arts. The technique, which targets an opponent’s lead knee, has long been a subject of debate regarding fighter safety and injury prevention.
The discussion regarding the legality of the strike resurfaced following UFC 331, which was held in Los Angeles this past Saturday. During a preliminary middleweight bout between Edmen Shahbazyan and Brunno Ferreira, Shahbazyan voiced complaints during the contest regarding Ferreira’s use of side-directed kicks aimed at his lower limbs.
While the technique remains legal under the current Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, Foster has been a vocal proponent of removing the strike from the sport’s arsenal. By aligning with Foster’s stance, White has brought renewed attention to the potential for regulatory changes that could alter how strikers manage distance and leg attacks in future competitions.
