Dana White Clarifies Status of UFC Heavyweight Championship
UFC CEO Dana White acknowledged an error in how the promotion handled the transition of the heavyweight title following Tom Aspinall's decision to vacate the belt due to eye surgeries. Ciryl Gane is now officially recognized as the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.
UFC CEO Dana White has addressed the confusion surrounding the organization's heavyweight title picture following recent administrative changes. White admitted that he made an error in the previous communication regarding Ciryl Gane’s championship status.
This clarification comes in the wake of former champion Tom Aspinall relinquishing his heavyweight belt. Aspinall stepped down from his position as champion to focus on his recovery following multiple eye surgeries.
While there was earlier public uncertainty regarding the distinction between interim and undisputed status, it has been confirmed that Gane is now the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. White’s admission of a mistake regarding the official announcement serves to resolve the ambiguity that followed the shift in the division’s hierarchy.
Gane is currently slated for his first title defense at UFC 334. The event is scheduled to take place at Madison Square Garden, where Gane will face challenger Josh Hokit.
